BBC RESOURCES
In a move that has been anticipated for many months, the BBC has now hived off its broadcast facilities, services and engineering divisions into a wholly owned subsidiary, as a limited company under the name BBC Resources.
APRS studio members will take a keen interest in this development, which the BBC freely admits is aimed at enabling the operation to compete more vigorously for non-BBC work.
'Producer's Choice' and other changes in recent years had led to a drop in demand for the OBs and Maida Vale operations as facilities for the Beeb's own productions. Rod Lynch, BBC Resources chief executive, commented, "Giving the facilities business the freedom to compete more extensively but fairly in the commercial marketplace is recognised both by the BBC governors and the government as the best opportunity to preserve our world-renowned craft base".
The APRS has always believed fair competition is good for business.
