THE VAT MAN COMETH?
A change in the VAT threshold - currently a turnover of 50,000 - a year is under consideration by Customs & Excise. Not, as has been the case previously, to raise the threshold in response to inflation, but to lower it, because of arguments that at this level it creates unfair competition for many small businesses and the self-employed.
Among this layer of membership of the APRS, opinion will be divided: if you're outwith VAT, your charges will be so much lower, and this can help you win, or keep, business. Not fair, those above the limit will cry.
So far, the matter has only reached the stage of a C&E consultation paper; to get a copy, or offer your view, write to
