"The Essentials of Audio Post Production"

The purpose of the course will be to acquaint staff to the
terminology used in the audio post-production industry and to give them a wider understanding of operations and practices.
Participants will be given knowledge that will enable them to
communicate more efficiently with clients and operational staff. This will enable them to answer client's questions more effectively
and know the right questions to ask of clients. They will have the knowledge to know where to direct questions.
The Gateway School of Recording and the APRS Education and Training
Initiative have structured this course for APPS. We thank SSL and AMS-Neve for their support.
Subjects covered will include:
- Concepts of mono, stereo, multi-track recording.
- Functions of mixing consoles and the importance of clean signal paths and good
monitoring.
- Mixing for film, television and surround. LCRS and 5.1,
7.1.
- Record and playback systems and the importance of
synchronisation.
- Checking with clients for codes, frame-rates etc.
- Chasing and locking
- Slaves and masters
- Formats for recording and playback and the importance if identifying the formats used by clients.
- Identifying the formats used in the organisation.
- The terminology used when discussing formats.
- The terminology used in Audio Post-Production
and the names of the main manufacturers equipment used.
- How soundtracks are put together.
- Recording dialogue and Automatic Dialogue Replacement.
- Recording wild tracks live, profanity etc.
- Short history of dubbing, how the various sounds arrive, traditional
techniques, the digital domain.
- Foley, dialogue recording, conforming and storyboard operations, editing, sound effects, atmospheres and
music.
- The different roles of the music mixer and dubbing mixer.
- How the digital age is effecting roles and working practices.
- Compression and equalisation
- Reverb and other effects
- Cinema playback systems
- Calibration
- Issues to do with "deliverables"
The first course will be taught at Videosonics in Camden Town. A
buffet lunch will be provided.
There will be the opportunity for participants to get a little
hands-on knowledge of procedures.
The cost of the course to APPS, AMPS and BKSTS members will be
�200.00 (Non-members �250.00). All prices plus VAT.
