The Recording Services industry which the APRS has represented for over 50 years, is facing a time of extraordinary change. The creative side of the music business is battling to come to terms with technological and copyright issues including secure e-commerce, new formats, such as DVD and SACD, and pressure to change its business models to accommodate the current desires of consumers.
It is unsurprising that the developments in the creative industry have impacted on the service industry as a whole and so there has never been a greater need for proper, informed representation. The Digital Revolution, whilst providing many exciting and creative opportunities, has introduced a new layer of production choice for the novice artist and the successful super-star alike, inevitably, affecting traditional service providers.
Pressures on the record companies to save money are likely to have an increasing effect on music recording studios many of which are having to seek fresh revenue streams to keep in the race. Whilst such new competition makes a healthy contribution to any industry, there are many businesses will find it hard to keep up with the pace of change.
A healthy and energetic trade association is key to facing the future confident that you are properly informed, supported and represented....but most of all, that your are not alone.
The APRS currently represents:
In the coming year we intend to introduce two new membership categories:
Recording Professionals membership will provide a combination of recording industry association memberships and benefits in a single 'one-stop' package. For the first, time those working in this way will be able to participate in the broadest range of technical, business and networking opportunities, receive a cross-section of industry publications and enjoy the benefits and credentials of other professional practitioners.
This is an area where the APRS, working with the Music Producers Guild (MPG), continues to lead the way. In addition to the well established accreditation scheme for audio courses, the E&Ti (Education and Training Initiative) is conducting a survey into the specific training needs of each sector of the service industries.
Soon the APRS will offer studio induction courses for administrative staff of member businesses and other sectors of the music business. As well as informing newcomers to the industry about the recording and mastering processes, induction courses will provide a great opportunity for participating APRS members to meet new potential clients.

New Association for the Recording Industry
The structure and membership rules of the Association of Professional Recording Services have remained largely unchanged for many years - the most significant alteration being the swapping of Studios for Services in the 1980s.
The Board of APRS believes that in order to respond to current needs of the industry, a fresh look must be taken at the way the Association is set up and organised. During the coming year we intend to undertake a whole-hearted review with the aim of establishing a new infrastructure to make us more efficient and effective.
For this initiative to succeed, we need the active support of members from every sector of the industry and especially from those who can devote a little of their own spare time to help the industry face its future challenges.
Early in 2001, we shall invite all members to attend an Extraordinary General Meeting to discuss details of special transitional arrangements. Provided the membership agrees, we shall assemble a focussed group of volunteers to carry out administrative review and set a date for an AGM when the new arrangements can be presented to the membership and formally endorsed as an amended constitution.
We hope to provide opportunities for every member to share their observations and ideas so if you would like to get involved with how your trade association works, please contact Francesca Smith or Peter Filleul.
